THE COMPLEAT (?)
WHO WANTS TO WASTE AN AFTERNOON
Hot Seat Program by Lee Novak
Fastest Finger Program and Text
by Timothy Vlk
Now you and your friends can see
who is fast enough and smart enough,
to win your way to the Hot Seat!
Fastest Finger
You will find that the menus and
editor/viewer of the Fastest Finger
program work very much like Lee
Novak's Hot Seat program.
The only difference on the first
menu is the option to LOAD and RUN the
Hot Seat program.
The editor makes files with 10
sets of questions and answers. The
editor has a different layout, because
each question needs only room for
three lines of text and the four
answers. But entering and editing text
and switching beteen edit mode and
view mode works the same.
When entering the four answers,
they [MUST] be put in the [CORRECT]
order. When you play the game, the
answers will be put in a random order
at that time. This means that you
could play the same question several
times and the answers will be in a
different order each time.
Play Game
This is where things work
differently. After selecting play game
from the first menu, a file selector
will show you the files on the disk to
choose from. Just make your selection
as normal.
Next you are asked what question
and answer set you want to play. Enter
a number from 1 to 10 or press "R" for
a random question.
You are now asked for the number
of human players for this Fastest
Finger Round. Enter a number from 1 to
10.
An input box now appears and each
player is asked to enter their name.
Once all the players have entered
their names, the list of names is
displayed and you are asked if this is
correct. If it is correct press "Y"
for yes. If you press "N", you will
then go back to the screen that
prompts you for the number of players.
Now a screen informs you who's
turn it is to play the Fastest Finger
Round All other players are asked to
turn around or to leave the room. When
you are ready to play, press the space
bar to begin.
The game screen has four boxes
near the top, the question box in the
middle, and the four answer boxes on
the bottom. The four boxes at the top
are where your answers are put. To
enter your answers you may use the
"A,B,C,D" keys. If you prefer, you can
also use the keys "1,2,3,4" or
"F1,F3,F5,F7".
If, for your answer, you entered
"B,C,A,D", in the boxes at top you
would see a letter in each box (B in
the left most, then C, then A and
finally D). If this is correct then
press the RETURN key. The border will
turn gray to indicate that your answer
has been entered. If you made a
mistake, press the SPACE BAR and the
answers will be erased (you can press
the SPACE BAR at any time to clear
your answers). Then re-enter your
answers and press RETURN.
Be warned, there is a 20 second
time limit!
If there are more players waiting
their turn, the next player is told to
get ready to play, and they have their
turn.
Once all players are done, the
answers are shown in the correct
order.
The next screen shows ten diamond
boxes with the names of ten players.
If a player was correct their box
turns green and their time is
displayed at the right. When the last
correct player's time has been shown
the player with the fastest time will
flash green. When this is done the
winning player will be congratulated,
and after a pause you will be brought
back to the first menu where you can
play Fastest Finger again or LOAD in
the Hot Seat.
Hot Seat
I made only a couple of small
changes to the Hot Seat program.
In the first menu I added the
option to LOAD the Fastest Finger
program.
Also on the winning screen I moved
the word "Congratulation" up three
lines (out of the big diamond box) to
make room there for the winner's name
(if you don't play Fastest Finger
first, this line will remain blank).
What Next?
I will see if there is enough room
in memory to put the two editors
together in one program and the two
games together in a second program, to
eliminate the time it takes to load
from one to the other.
I will try to make some music or
sound effects. From what I've tried so
far, it could be more annoying then
the real thing.
I am not good at understanding a
program writen by someone else, but if
I can, would anybody like to have "Is
that your final answer?" added to the
Hot Seat? The player could choose to
not use it, have it used sometimes, or
used often when you are wrong (to make
you stop and think, "Am I really
sure?".
I would like to thank Richard
Derocher for testing the Fastest
Finger game and for making some of the
game files.
I hope you enjoy this new addition
t Who Wants to Waste an Afternoon.
